After getting his daughter a recording contract, Janet quickly recorded her first self-titled album at the age of sixteen. Although no sales figures are known, it is estimated that the album sold around 250,000 copies.

Hot off the success of her last studio album, Janet along with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis decided to surprise everybody by releasing a dance album that features a socially conscious message. Issues discussed on the album include racism, illiteracy, bigotry, gangs, education, and drugs. Janet chose the numbers 1814 because that was the year Francis Scott Key wrote "The Star Spangled Banner." The album spawned seven top ten hits on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart, the most off of any album in history.

"Design of a Decade 1986/1996" is Janet's first greatest hits album. The album, released by A&M Records, features mostly songs that were recorded when Janet was signed to her former record company. In addition to that, Janet recorded two new songs for the project ("Runaway" and "Twenty Foreplay"). The collection was released with three separate cover photos for the United States, Japan, and the rest of the international community, respectively. The Japanese and international versions of the album contain the bonus tracks "The Best Things In Life Are Free" and "Whoops Now." A limited edition 2-CD version of the greatest hits collection was also released in Europe.

"All For You," Janet's seventh studio album, saw Janet returning back to Flyte Tyme Studios along with producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. In adddition to their production, hip-hop and R&B producer Rockwilder worked for the first time with Janet on several of the album's tracks. Singer Carly Simon delivered vocals as well as a sample on the song "Son Of A Gun". In Japan, the album had the bonus track "Who." The album was later re-released in the United States with an additional bonus remix, "Son Of A Gun (P. Diddy Remix feat. Missy Elliot and Carly Simon)." At the same time, a limited edition CD & DVD set of the album was also released.
